Quantum droplets in a dipolar Bose gas at a dimensional crossover

چکیده

Abstract We study the beyond-mean-field corrections to energy of a dipolar Bose gas confined two dimensions by box potential with dipoles oriented in plane such that their interaction is anisotropic unconfined dimensions. At critical strength system becomes unstable on mean field level. find ground state strongly influenced corrections, leading formation self-bound droplet, analogy free space case. Properties droplet can be found minimizing extended Gross–Pitaevskii functional. In limit strong confinement we show analytically correction interpreted as an effective three-body repulsion which stabilizes at finite density.

Observation of Quantum Droplets in a Strongly Dipolar Bose Gas.

Quantum fluctuations are the origin of genuine quantum many-body effects, and can be neglected in classical mean-field phenomena. Here, we report on the observation of stable quantum droplets containing ∼800 atoms that are expected to collapse at the mean-field level due to the essentially attractive interaction. By systematic measurements on individual droplets we demonstrate quantitatively th...

Half-quantum vortex molecules in a binary dipolar Bose gas.

We study the ground state phases of a rotating two-component, or binary, Bose-Einstein condensate, wherein one component possesses a large permanent magnetic dipole moment. A variety of nontrivial phases emerge in this system, including a half-quantum vortex (HQV) chain phase and a HQV molecule phase, where HQVs bind at short distances. We attribute these phases to the development of a minimum ...

Anisotropic excitation spectrum of a dipolar quantum Bose gas.

We measure the excitation spectrum of a dipolar chromium Bose-Einstein condensate with Raman-Bragg spectroscopy. The energy spectrum depends on the orientation of the dipoles with respect to the excitation momentum, demonstrating an anisotropy that originates from the dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms. We compare our results with the Bogoliubov theory based on the local density appro...

Anisotropic superfluidity in a dipolar Bose gas.

We study the superfluid character of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) in a quasi-two dimensional geometry. We consider the dipole polarization to have some nonzero projection into the plane of the condensate so that the effective interaction is anisotropic in this plane, yielding an anisotropic dispersion relation. By performing direct numerical simulations of a probe moving through th...

A purely dipolar quantum gas

In usual experiments with BECs, the only relevant interaction is the isotropic and shortrange contact interaction, which is described by a single parameter, the scattering length a. In contrast, the dipole–dipole interaction between particles possessing an electric or magnetic dipole moment is of long range character and anisotropic, which gives rise to new phenomena 1. Most prominently, the st...
